The Relationship Between Sleep and Stress

The Relationship Between Sleep and Stress

Sleep is a part of our daily activity that is essential to get us through day-to-day life. Having enough sleep for around 6-8 hours a day will recharge the energy we need to do our daily activities. But at some point in our life, we sometimes face unavoidable situations where stress and anxiety haunt us, eventually leading to sleep deprivation. And just like a vicious cycle, sleep deprivation will increase our stress, leading to other health problems.

The ANS or autonomic nervous system will release adrenaline and cortisol hormones in response to the stress that we experience. This will increase your heart rate and allows blood circulation that flows to your vital organs and muscles more efficiently thus preparing the body to take immediate action when necessary. This reaction is vital for human survival and is known as the fight-or-flight response. On daily basis, this reaction can be triggered by facing any problems that occur at work or in society which is not a threat to survival.

Dr. Annise Wilson at the Baylor College of Medicine website says that adults are most likely to feel stressed when they think about their life responsibilities too much. For younger people, stress can be triggered by the exams and assignments that they need to do. When people try to sleep, thoughts about their daily problems continue and disrupt quality sleep.

Insomnia is a sleep problem that is caused by stress. When we experience insomnia, we will have difficulties maintaining quality sleep. Insomnia occurs despite the time, situation, and place you sleep are adequate and comfortable. It is estimated that 10-30% of adults nowadays are living with insomnia. People with insomnia will experience fatigue, irritability, extreme daytime sleepiness, and other deteriorations during the daytime.

Addressing one of the problems that affect the quality sleep can often lead to improvements for the other. Reduce stress is the first step you have to take when you experience a sleep disorder. The better your daily lifestyle, the better you manage your stress. It’s a good thing to start fixing your work-life balance, adding exercise to your daily routine, and having a balanced diet throughout the week.

According to the sleep foundation website, here are the tips that you can do to reduce stress and get quality sleep.

  • Avoid using electronic devices before sleep time as these devices can emit blue light that sends signals to your body that it’s not time to sleep yet.

  • Doing regular exercise will help you to fall asleep more easily at night.

  • Try to go to sleep and wake up simultaneously every day to train your body clock.

  • Avoid alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine a few hours before you sleep.

  • Create your optimal bedroom atmosphere by dimming the light and reducing noise exposure from the outside.

  • Avoid looking at your clock if you wake up in the middle of the night as it can trigger your anxiety and may dissociate you from quality sleep.

  • Try getting up when you’re too stressed to sleep and haven’t gone to sleep after 15 minutes of trying as it will have the opposite effect on your sleep quality. Do a relaxing activity instead such as reading, listening to calming music, or meditating.
